Hostal Virreyes - Hostel Mexico City - Mexico

Built in 1947, the Hostal Virreyes was originally a fancy hotel where stars and VIPs like Rock Hudson, Piper Laurie and the Rockefellers used to stay when they came to downtown Mexico City. The hotel was also a favorite of the "lucha libre" Mexican wrestlers because of its location near the Arena México. In 2001, the hotel became a hostel, but kept its cool vibe and groovy interior. Nowadays, the hostel attracts artsy people, and the lobby, bar and café transform into art or music venues on weekends and select weekdays.

The rooms facing Izaz√°ga street can be noisy, as can the rooms on the first floor (during music nights downstairs). If you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs. The hostel does show signs of wear, and some of the carpets and curtains in the rooms could stand to be replaced. You'll need your own lock for the in-room lockers.

The hostel is about a 15-minute walk from the Zócalo, but like much of downtown Mexico City, this is not the best neighborhood to walk around in at night.
