Inside the swinging cantina doors of the trippy PulquerÃa Las Duelistas, young dreadlock-wearing hipsters chug pulque in a psychedelic Aztec fantasyland. Ah pulque, that ancient elixir of Mexico made of fermented maguey sap. It used to be that only Aztec priests were allowed to drink pulque, then only poor people did, but nowadays the drink has become super trendy.
In the PulquerÃa Las Duelistas, situated in the Centro Histórico about four blocks south of Almeda Central, the walls and ceilings vibrate with bright murals of ancient Aztecs, skulls, bees and even the legendary rabbit gods of drunkenness. Most revelers drink curados, pulque mixed with fruit or other flavors to make it more palatable and less viscous. Try the sweet piñon (piña colada) or the salty apio (celery).
For about $0.38 (5 pesos), you can commandeer the jukebox, which plays Mexican hits, Moby, Michael Jackson, Megadeth and everything else. The cantina is open 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. and seats about 80. The nearest metro stops are San Juan Letrán or Salto del Agua.
