Restaurante Nucleo

Locals pack this eatery at 3 p.m. for the afternoon comida, but you can skip the crowds by ordering this meal any other time from 1 a.m. – 5 p.m. Restaurante Nucleo, which seats about 60, is known for its food quality and the unusual salad bar, which comes with the set lunch menu. Salad bar offerings might include: seasoned green beans; noodle salads; steamed broccoli/cauliflower/carrots; cooked nopales (cactus leaves); Swedish meatballs; empanadas (meat-potato pies); pickled beets with fresh pineapple; sliced watermelon and papaya; and tunas (cactus fruits). Diners get all that with the basic $3.82 (50-peso) set menu, which also comes with soup, a choice of three main dishes, a dessert and a fruit drink. For $1 (13 pesos) more, you can choose from 14 main dishes. For entertainment, there's TV or serenading guitarists. Open 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday – Friday and 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday. The restaurant has a good breakfast menu, too.
