North of the city center, tourist attractions are comparatively few and far between endless blocks of grey apartment buildings and traffic. However sites such as the poignant Plaza de Las Tres Culturas- home to brutal massacres in both the 16th and 20th centuries – Aztec ruins of Tlatelolco and the huge pilgrimage site and shrines of La Basílica de Guadalupe are easy enough to get to by metro. The pyramids at Tenayuca and Santa Cecilia, small but well preserved, involve a bit more off-the-beaten-track adventures on local buses but are close enough to see in the same day and well worth the trouble for fans of Aztec history.
