The Nacional Monte de Piedad (Mountain of Compassion) is Latin America’s biggest pawn shop and is over 200 years old. The front rooms are always full of crowds of people attempting to flog their jewelry, pottery etc., whilst further back the wares of the unfortunate are on sale. This huge building just west of the Cathedral is purportedly on the site of the palace where Moctezuma housed his conquistador visitors.
