The Zócalo area is an ideal place to be based if spending time in the historic centre is high on your agenda. Many of the more faded buildings around here have been given a facelift recently, and an increased police presence means it's fairly safe to walk around at night. The Zócalo is a long way from the main nightlife and restaurant zones of la Condesa or the Zona Rosa, too far to stagger on your own, although there's a growing tourist-orientated scene which can translate into thumping
