The Gran Hotel, a magnificent old pile right on the Zócalo, is an architectural site in itself. The lobby is old-school grandiose with a beautiful stained glass cupola and quirky antique 19th century elevators-although guests aren't actually allowed to use them or sit in the cordoned-off chairs. The rooms are spacious, with all mod-cons, and the rooftop restaurant offers both good food and breathtaking views of the square. It's worth bearing in mind, though, that the hotel often hires itself out as a party venue and is regularly full of raucous guests who noisily celebrate until the wee hours.
