Real de Catorce Overview

By Christopher Minster

Real de Catorce – whose full name of “Real de Minas de la Limpia Concepción de los Álamos de Catorce” has been mercifully shortened to Real de Catorce or simply Catorce – is a charming, small mountain town in the province of San Luís Potosí. Catorce is a growing visitor destination, currently popular with mostly backpackers and hikers.

Real de Catorce was a small mining town for most of its history, and there are abandoned silver mines in the areas around town. Check out the ghost town or pueblo fantasma nearby if you’re interested in that sort of thing.  Several Hollywood films have been shot in the region: ask the locals and they’ll be happy to tell you about it.
