The Mayan archaeological site of Tenam Puente dates back to 600 AD. Its name means fortress and although only a minor part has been excavated, with a little imagination you can still see that this was once a well-guarded frontier city. The site itself is small but offers great views of Comitán from the top of the Acropolis. As well as pyramids, there are three ball courts.
The ruins are included on most tour itineraries to El Chiflón and the Lagos de Montebello. If you want to go independently, take a local bus south out of Comitán and ask the driver to let you off at the nearest junction to Tenam Puente. It’s about a 1 ½ mile walk from the bus stop.
