Safety

The center of Comitán is generally safe, although like anywhere, be alert if walking around alone at night and try to stick to brightly lit roads. Avoid driving at night on the highways around the state if possible, especially the isolated road towards Palenque (Highway 199). Banditry has greatly diminished in Chiapas in recent years but the odd isolated case has been known to occur. Petty theft such as pickpocketing is no worse than elsewhere in the country but it pays to be cautious with your personal belongings, especially in crowded places.
