El Pochote Market - Market Oaxaca - Mexico

El Pochote Organic Market offers a family-friendly atmosphere of nutrition and relaxation. You can duck under the aqueduct arches around the market and find a low wall on which to settle. There you'll find people quietly sipping on cups of mountain-grown coffee or the heavenly pre-Columbian "tejate" drink, made from cacao blossoms and corn. Teenagers wander around the market's periphery, chomping on whole-grain pizzas and muffins, while children dance around the fish pond, tossing parts of their tostadas to the curious Koi.

The market has a rectangular pond, zigzag brick patio and swaying muslin and wooden stalls - all of these create a pleasant atmosphere for visitors, largely middle-class Mexican and foreigners. A wandering trio, playing Andean flute, adds to the ambience.

Market vendors only set out their wares on Friday and Saturday mornings, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., so show up early to get the best pick of veggies, cheeses, honey, and yogurts - and don’t miss the robust Italian breads and the savory Asian dumplings.
