By Erin Helland

Mezcal is Oaxaca’s version of Tequila. It is made with the same plant as Tequila, agave, but is cured differently, which gives it a smokier taste and a darker color. Anywhere you go in Oaxaca you are sure to find Mezcal. The popular saying in Oaxaca is: If life is bad; Mezcal. If life is good; Mezcal!

There are many different varieties of this popular liquor. The basic is Mezcal Puro, either with or without gusano (worm). The other more exotic flavors are less popular with the locals, but fly off the shelves when foreigners visit. Favorites include Passion Fruit and Coffee.

If you are unfortunate enough to get sick while in Oaxaca, try what locals consider to be the ultimate cure. Three shots of Mezcal, taken back to back, are sure to make anyone feel better.
