A former monastery, the Church of Santo Domingo’s impressive baroque architecture is a must see in Oaxaca. It was founded by the Dominican order of monks, and construction begun in 1572. It took over 200 years for the building to be completed. Between 1608 and 1857 it was an active monetary, but was turned over for military use in 1866. In 1938 it returned to religious use. During the 90’s a full restoration was implemented.
Today the church is back to its original splendor, ornately decorated with a rather absurd amount of gold leaf. Visitors are welcome to wander through, but please be respectful of those there for religious purposes. Also, there is no flash photography allowed. There is also a museum and botanical garden on the premises.
