Jardin Etnobotanico de Oaxaca

Moving a massive 1000 year old cactus includes putting a newsprint ball on every single spike. This Biznaga as it is called, is a highlight of the garden's impressive collection of 9500 cacti and other plants, covering 450 different species. Located in the Santo Domingo temple's backyard, the garden is a pleasant place for a relaxing walk, away from the city streets. Visits are only possible as guided tours. For those with a decent level of Spanish, tours are more frequent, half the price but also half as long (one hour) as the English tours which are only three times a week

The botanical garden in Oaxaca is not only for plant lovers. It is also a great place to learn about culture and traditional medicine. The garden is adorned with different plants and cacti that are native to Oaxaca. The guided tour lasts an hour and a half to two hours. Tip: If possible, go at different times of the year for new experiences. Tours are given in Spanish on Monday–Saturday for US $5 at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. On weekdays at 5:00 p.m. there is also an afternoon tour. English tours are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 11:00 for US$10.
