The Zócalo is the place to see and be seen any night of the week in Oaxaca. A plaza surrounded by coffee shops and restaurants, it is the favorite hangout of locals and foreigners alike. It is at its prime on weekend nights, when bands play in the center, and the plaza is filled with people. Some just sit and enjoy the music, other sing and dance along.
The Zócalo is also the best place in Oaxaca to obtain tourist information. Either stop at a booth, or question one of the tourist ‘police’ walking around, they will be happy to help you with your question.

Dirty and unwelcoming, this area has seen better days. Protesters, with right, have taken it over. It has the most expensive food in Oaxaca, and after three weeks here, I can say not very good. Go up Alcala Street, it is much better.
Everyone loves the Zocalo though many complain that the 2005 renovation did more harm than benefit to the downtown square. Gone is the lush vegetation, abundant shade and green cantera. On the plus side, it remains a popular hangout for visitors and locals alike. Check out the mini-market underneath the kiosk for some tasty tortas.
