Hotel
A former convent of Santa Catalina de Siena, Camino Real Oaxaca is a historic gem with 91 luxurious hotel rooms which all either have a view of the lush gardens or quaint pedestrian walkway.
While on the expensive side, the hotel is luxurious, comfortable and includes over-the-top service by its large professional staff.
Walking through Camino Real is a treat in itself. You are likey to feel as if you´ve jumped back 100 years-- the stone architecture is accented by high ceiling passageways, ornate doorways, intricately painted walls, lush outdoor flower gardens, and captivating fountains. It feels mysterious, but comforting and is simply an experience unlike no other in town. Feeling like a king or queen here is a usual occurance.
All rooms have ceiling fans and individually controlled air conditioning. A hair-dryer, radio with alarm clock, remote-controlled satellite TV and a mini-bar, safety deposit box. Telephones come with data ports for computer connections to the Internet. While the gift shop has two computers with internet access for guest to use (for a fee), around the pool area free wireless is available for those guests who bring laptops.
If you want an all out lavish stay, choose the upgrade option, called the Camino Real Club. These guests stay in larger rooms, and the price also includes a gourmet buffet breakfast, cocktails and snacks served each afternoon by the pool, a fruit basket and welcome letter upon arrival and bathrobes and slippers for use by guests during their stay.
Deemed the most posh hotel in town by the natives, Camino Real, which took over operations in 1994, also boasts a stunning pool that lights up at night with a nice poolside bar and cocktail lounge lining it.
Fresh, flavorful and authentic Oaxacan cuisine can be found at the Hotel´s restuarant El Refectorio, which prides itself on serving a daily selection of different Mole sauces (a peppery and sweet chocolate sauce native to Oaxaca)
Don´t forget to take in the traditional Guelaguetza, a regional celebration full of music, dance and story-telling. The show is open to guests every Friday evening in the La Capilla salon and includes a gourmet buffet.
