If you are looking for an adventure in buying, hire a car and driver to take you to the outlying villages where you can purchase directly from the artisan. Villages have their specialties; clay art, pottery, basketry, weaving, alebrijes (the colorful hand painted odd-looking animals). This is a wonderful way to meet people and experience Oaxaca. It is helpful to speak Spanish and to have some knowledge of the products you are interested in buying. Be aware that much of the higher quality products go directly to city vendors while less passable merchandise is left behind.
