Chapulines

By Erin Helland

At every market in Oaxaca you will see old ladies selling chapulines by the bucket full. A bucket full of grasshoppers may be a bit startling to foreigners, who widely consider bugs as a nuisance rather than an afternoon snack. However, once you get past what they are, they are definitely worth a try.

They are made by frying the grasshoppers then coating them in lime juice and chili pepper. They are a snack that is packed full of flavor. Locals say that if you eat the chapulines during your visit you are destined to one day return to Oaxaca. Not sure how true this is, but I must say that everyone I know who has sampled this cuisine is indeed constantly dreaming of the day they will return to their beloved Oaxaca.
