By Michelle Hopey

Perfect bargin for backpackers looking for a safe, comfortable hostel close to Oaxaca's historic city center.

A converted old colonial house, Hostel Fernanda is located on Jesus Carranza. Just a five minute walk to Santo Domingo Plaza, Hostel Fernanda is near shopping, restaurants, bars and cafes. For such a prime location, Hostel Fernanda is amazingly quiet.

Private rooms are available, as are dorms for men and women. Beds are suprisingly comfy and so are the pillows. Bathrooms are communal and while there is 24 hour hot water available, be warned the showers are located off one of the main lounges and there is no changing room. There is a kitchen for guests to use as well.

The staff is friendly and the lounge areas tend to unite backpackers together with its comfy couches and cervezas available for purchase. Mountain bikes are available for rent. Not a party hostel, as all ages can be seen here. But like the rest of Oaxaca, Hostel Fernanda gives off a cool, comfortable laid-back vibe.

The cost is 75.00 (Mexican Pesos) or $7.50 USD for one person. A continental breakfast of bread, fruit and cafe or tea is included.

Traveler Reviews of Hostel Fernanda

Cozy, beautiful, calm hostel

Rating: 100%

I stayed here for about a week in the fall of 2004. It was beautiful, in a great location, and the owner and her daughter were extremely hospitable. Excellent breakfast too!
