El Importador

The large terrace in the least busy corner of the zocalo is a good place to observe the shoe-polisher stalls, people going to and from work, couples on benches or performances on the center stage. English-speaking waiters stand outside to catch gringos, but about half of the guests are Mexicans. El Importador serves a bit of everything: local and Mexican specialties, breakfast, baguettes, pizza, soup, salad, steak and fish. Service is friendly, portions are big and prices are high. As so often with central-square restaurants, the food itself is average ? but there is a good choice of coffees and a multitude of alcoholic drinks.

El Importador is a popular place in the Zócalo to sit outside and have a cocktail or a glass of wine from the bar. It is a quiet place to relax and watch the people and the happenings in the plaza. The prices are mid-range with options for a tighter budget such as the tuna fish salad. The menu offers a variety of items, and is an ideal place for a break from the traditional fare. Tip: Get a table inside to avoid being a prime target for local street vendors.
