Tlayudas are a fancy name for a simple, delicious, yet outrageously large tortilla creation that Oaxacans just can´t get enough of.
Tlayuderia Las Reliquias on Avenida Morelos serves-up (and is in constant competition with Tlayudas on Libres,) some of the best Tlayudas in town. While most Tlayuda shops are street stalls, Las Reliquias is set in the yard of a family that serves up this Oaxacan dish only between 8 p.m. and 12 a.m. The crisp, large home-made corn-tortilla is traditionally packed with Tasajo (thinly sliced, dried seasoned beef) or cecina (pork) black bean paste, lard, special Oaxacan cheese--quesillo-- and cabbage.
Cooked open-faced over coals, the tlayuda is finally folded over in a half moon shape and served.
When done cooking, it looks much like an over-stuffed, extra large, Quesadilla. Tlayudas here are always too large to even for a plate, considering a good portion of both end always hangs off the plate. With many street stalls in town that sell tlayudas, Las Reliquias is a family-run business, with a quaint open-air court yard with plastic tables and chairs to make you comfy, even when you are full to your rim.
