Laguna Manialtepec - Other Activity Puerto Escondido - Mexico

A nature lover’s paradise is just a short drive away (10 miles west along Highway 200) from Puerto Escondido proper. Laguna Manialtepec, which translates into 'place of lizards' in Náhuatl, is just under 4 miles (6 km) long and is connected to a river of the same name. Rising waters during the rainy season turn the lagoon into a tidal estuary.

At Laguna Manialtepec you can enjoy bird watching, hiking through the beautiful woods, or canoeing and kayaking in the lagoon (ask in one of the local restaurants for boat rentals). Among the hundreds of bird species that have been spotted in the area are jacanas, black-crowned night herons, parrots and egrets.

After dark, try swimming through the lagoon to experience the magic of the bioluminescence, or “fosforescencia,” created by marine plankton. The blue-green glow the organisms emit when they're disturbed is best viewed during the new and old moon (at full moon it cannot be seen). Many tour operators offer boats out into the lagoon during peak nights so visitors can swim and snorkel in the glowing waters.

To get to the lagoon by public transportation, catch one of the buses headed for Rio Grande. During the day, they leave Puerto Escondido every 20 minutes or so.
