The spiritual capital of the southern state of Chiapas, the city of San Cristóbal de las Casas is a friendly town known as a good base from which to explore the wonders of the state of Chiapas, from the ruins of Palenque and Tonino to natural wonders such as the Chorreadero Waterfall and the Rancho Nuevo Ecological Reserve, which has some marvelous caves to explore.
The city itself has a lot to offer: check out the city architecture, including the Santo Domingo de Guzmán Temple and Convent. San Cristóbal de Las Casas features a population high in descendents of the Maya: the city sometimes seems like an extension of Guatemala, not far to the south. This means that there are good artisan markets featuring finely made textiles. The best market is next to the Cathedral.
Many visitors to San Cristobal de Las Casas continue on to visit nearby San Juan Chamula, a small town rich in tradition.
