San Cristóbal and the surrounding areas offer a great many things to see and do. The most notable, of course, is the majestic Mayan ruin complex at Palenque, not too far away. Nature buffs will also want to plan some time for visiting the natural wonders of Chiapas, including the colorful Lagunas de Montebello, a gorgeous system of lakes and rivers that cut through the lush Chiapas countryside. The Sumidero Canyon is best seen by boat and offers some spectacular scenery. The Chiflón waterfall plunges 100 feet, and the Grutas de San Cristóbal is a fun-to-explore cave complex. El Arcotete is popular with climbers, who rappel down a 100-foot cliff. The Huitepec Ecological Reserve is a great place from which to appreciate the biological diversity of Chiapas.
If you’re more interested in culture, check out nearby San Juan Chamula, an indigenous town that still keeps many of their most fascinating traditions, or historic Chiapa de Corzo. If Palenque didn’t satisfy your urge to see ruins, there are several more to choose from in the region, including Tonina.
