Ex-Convento de Santa Domingo - Historical Building San Cristóbal de las Casas - Mexico

Before being restored in 1975, the building on the Westside of Santa Domingo was a former convent, chapel and, after the 1910 Mexican Revolution, was also temporarily a jail, library and cafeteria. Now the building houses the Cultural Center of Los Altos de Chiapas, a small historical museum (Spanish only) which focuses on the contentious past of the city of San Cristobal. (Closed on Mondays.)

The museum is also home to the Indian textile cooperative Sna Jolobil, which means "The weaver's house" in the Mayan language of Tzotzil. The items are a bit pricer than textiles that can be bought from nearby street vendors. Still, Sna Jolobil is a profit-sharing organization made up of over 800 weavers from the indigenous communities in Chiapas and you can usually find a few of the women in the store brocading.
