This is probably the best trip to do out of San Cristóbal and it is cheaper to do it on a tour than it is to go individually. It is only an hour to the boat dock from where launches go when they fill up but generally as there are lots of people who come to do this trip there is rarely a wait. The boat speeds through growing hills, stopping to see a crocodile if you are lucky, then enters the canyon proper, where 800m walls tower spectacularly above the narrow river. The canyon opens out to a dammed lake at the other side where the boat turns around and heads back. Trips here are usually combined with a trip into Chipa de Corzo. If you want to see the canyon from above you will have to go to Tuxtla-Gutierrez then get a taxi to a restaurant where there is a lookout point.
