Village tour to San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán

San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico

This is an interesting half-day side-trip if you want to learn about the local culture but the villages are not particularly pretty. Guides will give you a full run-down of the dual-religion in the area as well as detailing all things about local life. A visit to the candle-filled church is fascinating as you can watch (but not photograph) traditional ritual ceremonies including live chicken sacrifices taking place as a matter of daily practice. Most tours also take in a trip to a local home where you can watch weaving and tortilla making and try the local alcoholic beverage.
