Location:
San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico
Hotel
Hotel Hacienda Don Juan is just a mile outside of downtown San Cristobal de Las Casas, in the mountains of Chiapas. Furnished with antiques and local handicrafts, the ranch has retained an authentic colonial ambience. Flaunting "21 elegantly decorated rooms," the hotel building itself is typical of the Chiapas, built of adobe, wood, and stone. Individual fireplaces in every room adds to the charm of Hacienda Don Juan. Rooms are also outfitted with private bath, hot water, and cable TV. Single, double, and triple quarters are available.
Sneak downstairs to the Restaurant Bar "Los Alamos," where you can feast on both regional and international food, or call for room service from the comfort of your smoky fire-warmed room. Conventions and banquets are also possible at Los Alamos. Up to 500 people can be serviced outdoors, or 100 in the restaurant itself. Additional services provided at Don Juan's include: wireless internet, dry cleaning and laundry, phone, safety box, tourist information, and an on-call doctor 24 hours a day.
Getting There:
The hacienda is in the southwest portion of San Cristobal but it is best to take a taxi there as it can be difficult to find

Miles, the guide at Hotel Hacienda Don Juan, took me for a day tour of two ranches in the highlands of Chiapas. One was an organic coffee ranch and tropical fruit farm where I was able to participate in the process of growing and preparing coffee plants and beans. The other ranch is in the high mountains with pine, cypress and oak forests that are just covered with orchids, bromeliades and ferns. We hiked, rode horses, got acquainted with indigenous farmers and had a marvelous adventure. Miles is bilingual which helped a great deal and was very passionate about Chiapas and its ecology.
Very romantic for my husband and I with gorgeous indigenous fabrics and interesting Mexican antiques.
