For a cheap fill-up, stop in Tuxtla. A solid breakfast of eggs and beans, enchiladas, or pancakes will cost about three to four dollars in Tuxtla, while in San Cristobal the price often doubles. Lunches here can also slip under the five-dollars range and will satisfy even the largest of appetites.
Meals in the more vivacious tourist joints, offering entertainment and classy food can empty wallets quickly, but budget travelers can dine well in low-key holes-in-the-wall without breaking the bank.
The most traditional dishes include, tamales chapanecos, roasted pork, marinated pork called cecina, ribs, and various surprising stews including one with ground pumpkin seeds.
