This massive colonial edifice with 23 courtyards, designed by architect Manual Tolsá for Bishop Juan Cruz Ruiz de Cabañas, opened in 1810 as a charity home for poor children, but was soon commandeered by the military. Eventually, the institute reverted to an orphanage housing up to 3,000 children until 1979. Today, the UNESCO World Heritage site is an art museum. Visitors come to see the 57 frescoes (1937-39) by José Clemente Orozco, who spatters artistic blood all over the dome of the institute's former chapel in exploring themes of conquest, political terror and modern dehumanization.
