Officials estimate Guadalajara will have 22,000 hotel rooms by 2011. While there is currently lodging scattered in even far-flung neighborhoods, most visitors will find staying in or near the downtown the most convenient, due to the limitations of public transportation. Several downtown accommodations (in all budgets) are in renovated colonial buildings. If rock-bottom cost is your only factor, there are grim hotels near the old bus station that charge around 80 pesos a night. Note: The cheap hotels near the Plaza de los Mariachis are openly used for prostitution. Also: Room rates quoted by desk clerks are sometimes quite different from those posted online. Check both for the best rates.
