The Hotel De Mendoza is keen to point out it was built on the site of the old Santo Domingo Convent, adjacent to the Santa Maria de Gracia church, built in 1542 and cited as the town's first cathedral. Today, the hotel lobby and dining room evoke Guadalajara's colonial past with paintings of the era, gilded décor, and local pottery. The 104 air-conditioned rooms, however, are nice but not specifically "colonial." What is especially notable about the hotel is that it has an outdoor swimming pool, a rarity in the city center. The terrace has a nice view of the Catedral.
