An imposing structure in the heart of downtown, the Hotel Francés has been an institution in Guadalajara since 1610, when it opened to provide temporary lodging to traders. Nowadays, the popular 60-room hotel does a brisk business, despite its air of gentile shabbiness, notable even in the ratty but substantial old chairs in the courtyard. The hotel still looks historically grand, but not so elegant when compared to restored colonial hotels in the neighborhood. Of note to film buffs: Parts of "The Evil That Men Do," starring Charles Bronson, were filmed here in 1983.
