Guadalajara Safety

Much of Guadalajara's touristy downtown has a heavy security presence, especially at banks, where armed guards are the norm. Quite a bit of downtown, however, is eerily deserted and dark after 8 p.m. Travelers should stow their money safely when at the crowded Mercado San Juan de Dios and avoid the area just outside Plaza de los Mariachis at night. Above all, be alert when crossing streets: The newspapers report daily on pedestrian-involved accidents blamed on careless and drunken drivers.
