Oxkutzcab is called The State’s Orchard, a colorful reminder that the ancient Maya named this settlement the "place of breadnut, tobacco, and honey." Most visitors, though, will stop in Oxkutzcab because it is a sweet little place to spend the night when visiting the archeological sites of the Ruta Puuc.

The region’s abundance is on display at the Féria de la Naranja, Oxkutzab’s annual orange festival in August. At the "20 de Noviembre" Market well-known local artist Leonardo Paz has depicted everyday life at the mercado in a colorful mural. Across the street in the main square another Paz artwork brings forth violent scenes of the area’s past: the 1562 burning of countless Mayan books in nearby Maní, and the 19th century “Maya vs. Mestizo” War of the Castes.

Evangelization began here in 1548, with construction of the downtown Temple and Ex-Convent of San Francisco lasting until 1699. Oxkutzcab also draws pilgrims to the Hermitage of the Virgin of Pilar, a popular wedding site.

The marvelous LoltĂşn Caves lie 7 km (4 miles) south of Oxkutzcab. Also close to the town is Hacienda Tabi, an abandoned sugar plantation, which evokes the tremendous wealth of the hacienderos.
