Playa del Carmen is a pleasant, medium-sized city on the Caribbean in the northern part of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. Playa del Carmen is located in the heart of the region known as the “Riviera Maya,” a long swath of fine beaches that go from Cancún to Tulúm. It is located about 40 miles south of Cancún.
Traditionally a place to catch the ferry to the more famous island of Cozumel, Playa del Carmen has become a destination in its own right. Visitor life in Playa del Carmen centers on Fifth Avenue, or Quinta Avenida, a long street full of souvenir shops, boutiques, hotels and restaurants. When you’re not shopping or eating, Playa del Carmen offers a full range of water sports, some very nice beaches, scuba diving and more.
Nearby, there are places for sports such as rappelling and rock climbing. Snorkelers will want to check out the water park at Xel-Ha and Xcaret.
