Méridanos escape to this beachside town on weekends and in the summer for a bit of relief from the city’s relentless heat and humidity. From downtown Mérida, Progreso is an easy, direct 50-minute bus ride or car trip of 36km (20.5-miles). A wide malecón, or boardwalk, lines the seaside, and is the perfect place for an early morning run or evening stroll. Thatched roof huts called “palapas” serving super-fresh seafood and cold beer line the beach just a few steps up and over the benches that form a long, curving ledge between street and sand.

Your experience of Progreso will be determined largely by the presence (or not) of cruise ships docked at the port’s 6.5 km (4 miles) long pier. Now a regular destination on International cruise itineraries, Progreso shifts into a frenzy of commerce when the big ships are in port. A weekday trip off-season best reveals Progreso’s charms, when you will have the town and beach to yourself and the trinket sellers haunting the restaurants are a bit less aggressive.

The warm Gulf of Mexico waters are mostly calm and flat, ideal for wading because the sea floor drops off gradually, the reason that cruise ships have to anchor so far offshore.

Other places nearby Progreso: Isla Mujeres, Cancún, Valladolid, Santa Elena, Ticul, Celestún , Tulum, Escárcega, San Felipe and Campeche.
