
Tulum refers to two places: the 12th century Maya-Toltec ruins and the small town about 5 km away of the same name. Both the ruins and the town are not far south of the larger town of Playa del Carmen.
The town is small but growing, and there are a number of hotels and restaurants springing up, as more and more travelers decide to spend time at the ruins and get away from the big resorts of Cancún and Playa del Carmen.
One of Tulum's big attractions is the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, only a few kilometers away.
