Unlike the turtles on the Pacific, the Green Turtle and Hawksbill sea turtle do not lay eggs by the thousands. In fact, since the Indians and Creoles used to kill them often, as a source of food, they have become endangered over the past ten years. However, recent limits have been placed on turtle consumption. The best time to see the turtles nest is during the full moon and the new moon, night or day. To arrange a tour, ask for Bill McCoy, across from the Green Lodge. Turtles nest at the Pearl Keys, and expeditions cost $8 a day, plus the cost of gas. Each trip takes 25 gallons and holds up to seven people.
