Miskito Keys Biological Reserve - Activity Info. Puerto Cabezas - Nicaragua

The dozen of islets forming the Miskito Keys are hard to get to and lack any creature comforts – non-adventurous travelers, please pass! Only 15 to 20 families live out there, and some fishing companies have bases too. If you make it out there, you can rent a canoe or get a local to show you around the mangroves, in a full nature immersion. You will need to find your own accommodation, perhaps string up a hammock in someone’s place. Renting a panga (motorized boat) to reach the Keys, some three hours away from Puerto, will cost at least $500 to 800, because of the cost of gasoline – it can work for a large group. Alternatively, ask the Naval Force (stationed in Puerto) which fishing boats are headed out there and try to negotiate a ride (which may cost you around $15). This is not recommended for women, as it would mean being on a boat with dozens of men, no bathroom…Also be aware that you are heading off at your own risk, with no guarantees as to when you might get a return ride.
