When to Go to Big Corn Island

During the dry season (from January to July), Big Corn Island is generally cooler and breezier than other parts of Nicaragua. Rainy season lasts from August until late December. During that time, the waters overtake the beach on the north side of the island, so it is best to book a place to stay on the South End. It is also important to note that rates are generally lower during this time and although there is the occasional torrential downpour, there are also several sunny days and warm weather.
Big Corn Island shares many holidays with the rest of Nicaragua, including Sandinista’s Day on July 19th and Independence Day from Sept. 14th-15th. It is a very popular destination during Semana Santa (Easter Week), as well. They also celebrate the Crab Fest from August 27th-28th, which is unique to the Caribbean Coast and commemorates the liberation of the slaves. During this festivity, there are colorful parades, activities and an election to crown the Miss Corn Islands.
