The easiest way to travel to and from Waspám is by air. La Costeña flies three times a week, on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, departing from Waspám around noon, for $160 return. La Costeña has an office by the airstrip, open mornings – until the flight leaves – and the only contact number is themanager’s cell phone (8932 4416).
By bus to and from Puerto Cabezas ($6 one way), it is a bumpy ride on an unpaved road, which can take between 4 and 6 hours, depending on the state of the road (more potholes during rainy season), pit stops and breakdowns. Buses depart from the central park at 6 am and 7 am. A taxi (which can only be hired in Puerto Cabezas) would cost between $100 and $150. You can also catch a bus to Managua via the Mining Triangle (Rosita, Siuna) and endure 24 hours of road. The ride costs $25, there are departures Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Border crossing into Honduras: There is now a Nicaraguan immigration office in Leimus, a 30-minute ride from Waspám.
In Leimus itself – within walking distance – is the Honduran immigration office, from which pick-up trucks can take you to Puerto Lempira, 7 or 8 hours away.
