Population 11,800. One of the oldest municipalities in Chontales, much of Comalapa’s atmospheric colonial architecture is in tact, making it a good place to get a sense of Chontales’ history. The construction of its main church was completed in 1816 and has since been declared a national monument. This quiet town gained some prestige during the presidency of Emiliano Chamorro, who was married to a local woman. Camolapa sits at the mouth of the Cuisala river, borders Lake Cocibolca, and is home to Piragua Hill, a forest reserve, making it a tranquil place to take in the scenery. Patron Saint celebrations take place February second, honoring the Virgin of Candelaria, and the feast of the apostle Saint Bartholomew is celebrated in August. The only way to get to Comapala is by taking a bus which leaves Camoapa at 6:30 a.m. and returns to Camoapa at 4:00 p.m. Located 80 miles from Managua and 19 miles from Juigalpa, and 20 kilometers from Camoapa.
