Hiking Quizaltepe - Hiking Camoapa - Nicaragua

At 300 meters high, this monolith (whose name in Nahautl means “place of the grinding stone”) is visible from all over the Boaco province. The volcanic material from which the peak is comprised was used by indigenous peoples for manufacturing tools to grind corn. Hikers will want to be in good shape to attempt this climb, which can last up to 6 hours and is very steep. At the top your efforts will be rewarded with a view of the Pacific ocean. The only way to ascend is from the rock’s north face, as the other sides are not traversable. The point of access is the Empalme de Camoapa (also called San Francisco), a stop on the highway. A guide for this climb is imperative, and you may be able to arrange for one at Hotel Las Estrellas in Camoapa, or in Barrio Cebollin, a community slightly west of the highway.
