Granada is Nicaragua's most popular tourist destination, and the area offers everything a traveler could want. Beautiful architecture? This is the oldest colonial city in the Americas, with an unmatched architectural heritage. Volcanoes? Hike up Volcan Masaya for a chance to stare into the bubbling lava that once swallowed human sacrifices. Tranquil waters? Las Isletas provides cool and clean swimming opportunities, and if you head a bit further out the crystal clear waters of Laguna de Apoyo beckon.
It's no wonder that many travelers get stuck here. Whether it's volunteering, studying Spanish, or writing a travel guide, the city has a way of keeping you around. Granada has great restaurants and some of the nicest hotels and best-equipped hostels in Nicaragua. And with the country being as small as it is it's tempting to use the city as a base to explore the entire surrounding region. Pueblas Blancas, Mombacho, and Masaya are all easy daytrips from the city.
