Cemetery - Other Activity Granada - Nicaragua

This cemetery holds the remains of Granada's rich and powerful. Six presidents are among those interred here. Students of Nicaraguan history will also recognize the recurring names of Chamorro and Sandino among the large, stately tombs. The eerie mausoleums of this necropolis are definitely worth strolling through, and provide an interesting insight into Granadan culture and spirituality.

The complex is dominated by the Capilla de Animas, a one-third replica of a church in France. Walk about 100 meters behind the chapel and you'll see a large, marble tomb reminiscent of Notre Dame cathedral. Whoever lies beneath had a lot of money - as well as a lot of enemies. The tomb's identifying markings have been chiseled off, adding to the cemetery's mysterious feel.
