Kalala Lodge opened one door down from Granada institution The Bearded Monkey, suggesting that this new hostel and café/bar is ready to face the competition full-on.

As ‘The Monkey’ is often booked up, Kalala Lodge makes an equally economical alternative for the backpacker on a budget (dorm beds are US $6 per night, basic doubles US $10 – all with shared bathroom and access to secure lockers). Who knows - with time, Kalala might even surpass its neighbor.

The lodge has a small and lovely, lit-up outdoor bar (in a tropical garden cultivated by owner/botanist Gustavo Martinez). The bar seems to be a popular hang-out, with a mellow and relaxing vibe.

Kalala Lodge also has a well-equipped kitchen that guests can use, although the space can get a bit crowded at mealtimes when hostel staff also use it to prepare meals for the café (a selection of breakfasts, lunches and dinners are available at reasonable prices – and fresh coffee and tea is complimentary throughout the day for guests). The bar is well-stocked with Nicaraguan and imported beers, as well as spirits, juices and cocktails.

Although there is no internet access in the hostel, guests are entitled to 10 minutes of free usage per day at an internet café across the road. A laundry service is also available at US $3 a load.

Staff at the lodge can fix up tours for guests (volcano hikes, island tours and Thursday night social trips to the nearby town of Masaya) and rent bikes out for US $5 per day. Information on local attractions, Spanish courses, and other budget accommodation in Nicaragua is also easy to access, with a multitude of leaflets and posters on display in the reception area.
