The streets around Tica Bus are known as the best place in Managua to find backpacker-friendly budget accommodations (although with a few mid-range hotels). Not all rooms are created equal, though -- more than in other parts of the city, there is a drastic difference between the cheapest of the cheap and the next step up. You can always find a $5 place to rest your head, but don’t expect spotless facilities or even fresh sheets. Another $3 will buy you a much better and cleaner space and in some hostels, a private bathroom as well. Shop around before settling on a room (in your quest, you might find yourself accompanied by a local “guide,” homeless men who hostel owners pay to bring them clients).
The area, while not dangerous, is not one of Managua’s finest, so keep your wits about you when walking to and from your hotel at night. If you’re looking for luxury, you will have to seek it elsewhere. Most people do not speak English in this area, so come prepared with at least some key Spanish phrases.
