Casa Presidential - Historical Building Managua - Nicaragua

On the north side of La Plaza de la Revolucción is the Casa Presidential. Once a social club for the Nicaraguan elite, the building was destroyed (along with the rest of the city center) in 1972. Rebuilt by Nicaraguan President Arnoldo Alemán during his tenure in the late 1990s, the brightly-painted brick building is now presidential office space. (No one actually lives there.) After winning the 2006 elections, President Daniel Ortega changed the name of the building to “Casa de los Pueblos,” a rather futile gesture since the grounds are still off limits to the general public. Outside, a bronze Sandino stands with his coat over his arm as though he, too, is waiting to go inside.
