La Catedral Vieja - Historical Building Managua - Nicaragua

La Catedral Vieja is arguably the most vivid and poignant reminder of the devastation wrecked on Nicaragua’s capital in 1972. The church, once known as La Iglesia Catedral Santiago de Los Caballeros, survived a massive 6.8 earthquake in 1931, only to succumb 41 years later to a quake that measured 7.9 on the Richter scale. Much of the interior collapsed and, during the subsequent years of war and turmoil, the cathedral was never restored. By the early 1990s, the grand old church had been replaced by the modern Catedral Nueva. In 2009, experts were in the process of reinforcing the Catedral Vieja’s delicate adobe structure with concrete, but there were no plans to open the interior to the public. The cathedral’s neoclassic frame is impressive (even if you can only stand outside it), serving as a stark monument to the crumbled glory of Managua’s former center.
